In the United States, The New York Times is recognized as the most authoritative and most respected newspaper, enjoying a high reputation in the community. The thesis is a study on Chinese women in the New York Times under the perspective of international communications and analyses the image of Chinese women in The New York Times from the agenda setting and social gender point. The author use the quantative analyses to study the reports of Chinese women in The New York Times from the number of samples, reported genre, geographical distribution and content selection from topics. Then the text analysis from the article title, source, reported in terms of image and ideas advocated. First, although the reports of Chinese women increased year by year, compare to the total amont of the reports of China in The New York Times, it is a very small proportion. The reports in politics and social sections are far more than other sections. The negative reports in the politics section is also increasing. The image of Chinese women presents numerous problems in the polictics and social sections, such as the feminist movement and the slow development of the situation. In the issue of choice, The New York Times gives full play to the agenda-setting function. The reports focus on the rights of women, which is consistent with the Western countries and the media in attacking Chinese human rights. From the sources of the news, the The New York Times basically balanced news source reference, but in national issues and policies (in the family planning policy represented) appeared more negative reports and unbalanced sources quoted situation. Rural woman have been given very little attention and the coverage of this large group is clearly insufficient. Finally, the author analyzes the translations and the choices of the reports on english website of The New York Times. The author found out the media intends to avoid some sensitive topics, and it is obviously tendentious on some of the translations.
