Traditional villages is an important carrier of farming civilization, they not only carry theconnotation of traditional houses, traditional streets and other substantial meanings, but alsocarry our country’s splendid intangible cultural heritage. But since the reform and opening upbegan, China has accelerated the pace of industrialization and urbanization, causing newproblems to the protection and development of traditional villages. Only in the past decade,the number of natural villages in our country decreased by about900,000, including a largenumber of traditional villages. The government has realized the importance and necessity ofthe protection of traditional villages and conducted the accreditation work of famous Chinesehistorical and cultural villages and Chinese traditional villages. The assessment outcomeswere issued in batches, aiming to promote the protection of our country’s traditional villages.The formation, distribution and characteristics of traditional villages are must ways of in-depth study of traditional villages. Based on the field surveys of the status of traditionalvillages in Beijing, data collection, literature summary, this paper does a systematic andcomprehensive study on the distribution and characteristics of the traditional villages inBeijing. The paper is divided into five chapters. The first chapter explains the origin andbackground, purpose and significance, research methods and concepts related to the paper,sorting out and summarizing the current status of related researches both at home and abroad.It also defines the paper’s scope of the study and brings out the research framework of thepaper.The second chapter explains the historical evolution of the traditional villages in Beijingfrom ancient times to the Qing Dynasty and analyses the process of growth and prosperity oftraditional villages in Beijing.The third chapter analyses the influences of the factors such asnature, society, policy, and Beijing urban construction on the formation, distribution, andevolution of the villages.The fourth chapter summarizes the characteristics of Beijingtraditional villages’ names and their relationship with the origin of the villages. It alsoanalyses the distribution characteristics of the traditional villages from different spatial levels,Summarizing the pattern and characteristics of the traditional villages.The fifth chapter takesthe Yanqing district of Beijing as an example, analyzing in depth the distribution andcharacteristics of the traditional villages in this region from the aspects of formation age,population distribution, type features and others.
