The academies as the Chinese ancient peculiar education organization had played amajor role in talent cultivation of the mid to later of China’s feudal society and thedevelopment of academic culture. They had formed quite perfect college rules andregulations during the long-term development, which had "three causes" pursuit ofteaching, sacrifice and book collection. When externalized those various regulations ofancient academy into building, it could be roughly corresponded to several differentfunctions space areas such as the lecture hall, dormitory, library, stack, shrine, temple,storage and kitchen. Then these buildings combined with each other and formed thecollege buildings of extreme civilian characters. The ancient academies had two differentdevelopment directions included government and folk as they were founded. With thedevelopment of history, folk academies were increasingly growing in number anddistribution, which became far ahead of the other kinds of education forms and undertookthe main education work of the late feudal society of China.Hubei&Hunan areas had the similar cultural background and attached greatimportance to the cultural education, where folk academies got rapid development duringMing and Qing dynasties. Due to various reasons, folk academies in Ming and Qingdynasties had formed a lot of different architectural features with other historical periodsand regions. This article will analyze the characters of their location, space form,monomer architectural, environmental construction and decoration aspects on the basis ofactual investigation cases, and sum up architectural styles of the folk academies in Hubei&Hunan areas which had Ming and Qing characteristics by compared with the earlyacademies of the perfect rules and regulations.Finally, this article analyzed the cause of the folk academy systems in Hubei&Hunan areas through the architectural prototype, education behavior and culture factors, inorder to achieve deeper analysis on architectural culture of the folk academies in Hubei&Hunan areas, and also discussed on the practical significance of folk academies and theenlightenment to modern architecture design.
