Belt Conveyor is the main equipment of bulk material transportation. Compared with other transportation equipment, it has characteristics of long transferring distance, large capacity, reliable operation and easy to automation operation and so on, it is widely used in all industrial areas. Drum is the main transmission component of belt conveyor, and it has a high design requirement.In current series of belt conveyors in our country, the maximum diameter of drum is1600mm, and the matching belt tensile strength is4000N/mm. At present the tensile strength of domestic conveyor belt is far greater than4000N/mm, therefore the matching drum is needed to be designed. This topic is entrusted by an enterprise, to design large nonserial drum of diameter range1700~2000mm. The design includes structure design, theoretical calculation and simulation of16different size drum and development of parametric drawing software.Through the analysis of the researching status of belt conveyor drum at home and abroad, the design idea and method of the general structure of large drum and its parts is put forward. According to the tensile strength and width of the conveyor belt, the size series of drum shell is calculated, then the size parameters of the components are identified.A10order modal analysis of the preliminary structure of the drum is done in this paper, according to the modal vibration mode and the amplitude of drum structure,the disadvantages of drum structure design are optimized, and a10order modal analysis of the optimized structure is also done, then with the comparision of various order modal maximum amplitude before and after optimization, finally the drum structure is determined.Through design of the structure of drum and parts, and determination of the size parameters of drum, a database of these size parameters is established by Access, connection and access to the database by VB. A parametric design of drum and its parts is done by the secondary development between VB and AutoCAD, finally the automated mapping is realized, which greatly improves the design efficiency.
