With the development of economy and advancement of society, transportation has been intelligentized in all recent years. Vehicle Navigation System (VNS) is useful to alleviate traffic congestion and accelerate traffic logistics. As an essential component of Intelligent Transportation System (ITS), the VNS has aroused much concern from researchers and become a research hot spot in ITS. VNS is primarily composed of the global positioning system (GPS) and the geographic information system (GIS).This article first summarized the domestic and overseas development status of VNS, and then briefly introduced the basic principles of Global Positioning System (GPS), embedded Geographic Information System (eGIS) as well as their applications in VNS. Subsequently, this article presented the design scheme of embedded hardware platform; With respect to the design of software system,we successfully transplanted Windows CE.net operating system,and implemented the navigation application software on the basis of eSuperMap development platform, including the digital map visualization, GPS signal receiving and processing, Map information inquiry,path selecting and navigation processing. This application software has realized the core functions of the VNS.The main work and innovation in this paper can be summarized as follows:1. We built a complete embedded GPS navigation hardware platform by using the S3C2440 processor with the core of ARM920T, GPS receive,8”SHARP LCD and Four-Resistance Touch Screen.2. We chose Microsoft’s WindowsCE.net as the embedded equipment’s operating system.By using the integrated development environment Platform Builder 4.2 provided by Microsoft, we customized an operating system for the hardware platform and transplanted it to the hardware platform successfully.3. Based on the eGIS product-eSuperMap, an integrated navigation system is implemented, including basic map operation, such as digital map visualization, zoom in, zoom out, roaming and map layer manager, the query of the special object attribute on map, GPS signal receiving and processing, the real time location showing on map,the shortest and the fastest tracking analyzing, simulated and real navigation and so on.4. Compare with its overseas counterparts, the GPS vehicle navigation system in china is underdeveloped. By absorbing merits of existing products and incorporating our own research fruits, our developed navigation system is equipped with all the basic functions for vehicle navigation and is very easy to use, which has shown to be a beneficial attempt of developing GIS software platform independently and will certainly benefit further research and development of VNS and ITS.
