As private cars getting popular in China, vehicle navigation system is gradually getting into people's life. Though only a few people in China use the navigation system, its huge market potential is regarded by the society. Nowdays the navigation system products are fittings for limousines, but is luxury to moderate and low-end cars. Research shows that cars under 100,000 yuan has a 40% market share, which between 100,000 and 300,000 yuan has a 40% market share, and which more than 300,000 yuan has a 20% market share. What shows that the proportion of moderate and low-end cars is more than 50%, thus our research is very worthy. And embedded vehicle navigation system comes forth. Using embedded operating system as its platform, combing Global Positioning System and Geographic Information System, the embedded vehicle navigation system is a hybrid system of software and hardware. It is an ideal solution of navigation, location, geography information query and spatial data management for mobile users. The research mainly involves computer science, such as mobile computing, embedded developing, computer graphics and wireless networks, the science of surveying and mapping, such as the principle and data organization methods of geographic information system, the visualization of digital maps, location and navigation based global positioning system (GPS) and optimal route planning algorithm, etc.How to organize and visit map data without the support of DBMS and how to implement optimal route planning on limited hardware resource are the difficulty and innovation of this thesis. We imitate ESRI's methods and store map data in map data files and their relavant indexing files. A file is something like a table in a database, and a foder is like a database. Which speeds the visiting greatly. For optimal route planning, this thesis adopts enhanced Dijkstra algorithm, which reduces searching range and storage space. We use linux OS and Micro Windows 0.89 GUI, code with C++ in this research. First, this thesis analyses the staus quo, technology background, characteristics and application of Embedded Geographic Information System and provides the technical foundation for Embedded Vehicle Navigation System. Second, it sets up the whole logical framework, implements the basic function and provides application solutions for EVNS. We mainly study the design of digital map and optimal route planning algorithm. Finally the thesis summarizes the factor that should be considered in the period of EVNS development and gives a practical instance-"SmartNavigation 1.0" and limitation of this design.
