| The Peking Magazine is an important publication in modern history of our country. It was presided by William Martin, Joseph Eakins and John Shaw Burdon in early times. Owing to the leaving of Joseph Eakins and John Burdon from Beijing, since10th, William Martin became the only one editor. From August1872to August1875, a total of36magazines were published.(besides William Martin spending a holiday at a summer resort in August1874so that one period of the magazine had missed) There were about1000books published in an episode of the Peking Magazine. Many of them would be distributed in the practical knowledge dissemination in China and the officials of Westernization movementThe content settings and column layout of the Peking Magazine can be subdivided into six parts, namely, introducing the feature article of "western learning","news of various states ","miscellanea", papers of School of Combined Learning, questions and answers from the readers, advertisement."News of various states" section plays the role of news section in this magazine, and it is also the emphasis of this paper.The reason why the Peking Magazine much more importance in the history of journalism and communication in our country is that it is the first magazine in Beijing and north China in history of Chinese journalism. Secondly, unlike previous newspapers of missionary, The Peking Magazine is a comprehensive journal of lay particular stress on science, during the three years of being published time, No article on the religious is involved. Thirdly, we can find the tendency and the concealment from the terms of choreography and subjectivity of news text rendering shows in this journal after studying of its news reports in-depth.Fourthly, the three years of its being published is also between the westernization movement in China in the early stages.It has a close connection with westernization movement.This article is divided into five parts:firstly, the introduction of the researching value and literature review of the Peking Magazine; secondly, the summary of the Peking Magazine; thirdly, analysis of the news reports texts in the magazine; fourthly, analysis of major countries image that the news reports showing in the Peking Magazine; fifthly, analysis of the magazine’s status and the impact on the history of Chinese journalism. |
