Established in Shanghai in August 1911 by an American,Millard,Broke the monopolization of international news owned by the British,The China Press was a daily English newspaper. At One Time,The China Press has largest circulation of Any Foreign Newspaper in the Far East, its circulation even exceeded the North China Daily News. The China Press lasts 38 years in China. The biggest difference between The China Press and the foreign newspapers in China at that time was that they published important news on the front page and a large number of Chinese news. The number of readers on the front page of a newspaper is twice that of other pages. The front page reports of a newspaper often reflect what the newspaper is most concerned about.Because the front page reports a lot of Chinese news,it is generally acknowledged that The China Press has played an important role in Western readers' understanding of the real China. However,up to now, there has been no research on how this American newspaper reports on China, how it views China and why it views China in this way.It is helpful to clarify the emergence and dissemination of American newspaper tradition in China and to diversify the understanding of China's history from the perspective of "the other".The analysis of why The China Press has become the largest publication in China under the management of Miller and others will be more helpful to learn from history and provide reference for China's international communication. Therefore, according to the textual materials of The China Press(1911-1916),in view of the above problems, this paper first analyses why The China Press started its publication in China and how it took root in China after its publication. Then,by means of quantitative analysis, the general rules of China's front-page reports in The China Press are summarized. In terms of the frequency of reports, the front-page reports of Continental Daily are basically consistent with the rhythm of China's reality. From the point of view of topic setting, the front page is dominated by hard news of current political nature, and has news reports of culture, society and economy. The China Press' s coverage of China's news is based on "the perspective of international news" and strives to achieve a balance in its coverage. This is also an important factor for The China Press to gain a large number of readers and quickly open its circulation at the beginning.Quantitative analysis shows that The China Press has the largest amount of reports on China's internal affairs, followed by international relations issues, social issues, cultural issues and economic issues. On this basis, this paper integrates and classifies these issues, and analyses how and why The China Press treats China from the aspects of how The China Press reports on China's internal affairs, how newspapers and periodicals construct China's international relations, how to look at the cultural life of the West, and how to carry out its policy of "devoting to progress in China".Based on the analysis of the original materials of the newspapers from 1911 to 1916,this paper holds that it is biased to unilaterally consider it as a newspaper that promotes the development of China from the perspective of "altruism";or simply consider it as serving the national interests of the United States from the perspective of "egoism".China reported on the front page of The China Press that for the United States,it is a window to learn about China's affairs, breaking the monopoly of British newspapers and magazines, and issuing "Voice of America" on the beach. For China,it conveys a more realistic picture of China in the international arena. The China Press view China from the perspective of "American elite" and support China's development on the basis of safeguarding the national interests of the United States. However, they also practice their “devoting to progress in China”policy.Americans gain material benefits, power order and personal prestige from newspaper practice.China takes this opportunity to convey the real China to the world and benefit from international public opinion. This process is more or less an existence of "equivalence and reciprocity".
