In August 5,1815,the British missionaries Robert Morrison and William Milne set up the "Chinese Monthly Magazine" in Malacca.This is the first Chinese modern newspaper,also the start of modern newspapers and periodicals.With the constant localization reform of missionaries' Chinese newspapers and periodicals in China,part of the direct propaganda of Christianity in the publications gradually weakened.Meanwhile,a new way for Chinese people to understand the Western civilization has been exploited--the spread of science and technology.It also made this kind of newspapers play a pivotal role during the "Western learning to the east" movement in the late Qing Dynasty.It not only promoted the modernization of China to a certain extent,but also promotes the enlightenment of the Chinese people and the emergence of the modern journalism industry in China."The Peking magazine" is one of the representatives of this kind of publications.It was the first modern Chinese newspaper published in Beijing,and it was a comprehensive publication that focuses on introducing western science and technology.The editor in chief W.A.P Martin and others introduced a large number of western science and technology in this journal and showed readers the local customs and recent news events,which not only strongly supported the development of Westernization Movement,but also opened up the vision of Chinese people.This article is divided into five chapters.The article focuses on the "Items of News" of the Peking magazine,in order to explore the attitude and tendency of W.A.P Martin and others on news selection from the analysis of the news dynamics in various countries.The first chapter is the introduction section.The main content is to introduce the research background and research issues,and to review and summarize the related literature.The second chapter is the overview section.Through an overview of the natural information of the Peking magazine as well as,editors,and authors so as to obtain overall information of the publication,and starts the following analysis and discussion.The third chapter carries out a text analysis of the news report section of the Peking magazine.Through the analysis of the news content and corresponding reporting styles of the six major categories of politics,economy,society,education,science,culture,and education,it compares the reflection of the power of the colonial monarchy and the weakness of the colony.The fourth chapter is the main national image analysis section.This chapter builds on the theory of attribute agenda setting and uses the contrast between the colonial countries and colonies to examine how the "strong" and "weak" national image is constructed by enlargingor reducing certain attributes in the news.And analyze the reason and purpose behind this behavior.The fifth chapter is the analysis part of the factors that influence the defense behavior of missionaries.This chapter starts with the complexity and contradictions of missionary status and examines the relationship between the missionary's defense of colonialism in western colonial countries and the western ideology and values.After analyzing and demonstrating the aspects above,the paper concludes that: W.A.P Martin,the chief editor of the Peking magazine,used the news section of the publication to deliberately construct different images of colonial metropolitan states and colonies.He used the discourse power of the powerful nation to represent the colonial powers to beautify and defend colonial activities.However,the contribution made by the Peking magazine to China's modernization development is still indelible,and Chinese culture is also more prosperous and creative because of the collision and integration with western culture.
