There are decades of history using CAX technology such as CAD, CAM widely in theprogress of product development and production. A wide range of dates form technologicalprocedure, drawings video, analysis results are produced in the product life cycle because ofintroducing digitization technology. These dates have the problems of high redundancy,retrieval difficult, poor safety, which have been be a great challenge of businessadministration. For solving these problems, Product Data Management(PDM) technology,aiming at above problems, can be used to manage related description information and processinformation of product. However, the key to implement the PDM system successfully isestablishing a complete product information model. In allusion to the drawbacks of theproduct information model existing in the product information of PDM system, the PDMtechnology centered on the product information model is proposed, which is from a uniformproduct information model and based on "A Model with Four Bodies " product informationmodel architecture, based on, and therefor a unified information platform of the productdesign and manufacture in the enterprise is built.The research is based on ‘the theoretical methodology of project and product design’,being the National Natural Science Foundation (60635020) project. Firstly, the basicconcepts, function,development, research status and trend of the PDM technology areelaborated. Secondly, based on the in-depth analysis of PDM theory, studies the systemarchitecture and basic function of PDM are studied, and the AMFB product informationmodel structure system proposed by author’s team described. Thirdly, the framework of thenew PDM system based on product information modelis proposed, and research of datastorage management, product structure and configuration management, process managementand project management of the new PDM system fulfilled. Fourthly, the architecture of PDMsoftware is proposed, and the PDM prototype system and the system database designed anddeveloped. Finally, a comparative analysis between existing PDM system and DI-PDM inarchitecture, information model and functional modules is done, which shows the DI-PDMsystem has a obvious advantage in various aspects.
