Along with the era of knowledge economy and the rapid development in computer technology and IT, information and knowledge resources have expanded tremendously. Being an important knowledge storage and service department, library in colleges and universities are facing different challenges and opportunities from that in the information era. In order to maintain sustainable development in the era of knowledge economy, we must carry out a series of reform in aspects including service concept, service content, service model, librarian quality and so on. Only through these measures can libraries meet the individualized and specialized needs of users. This article presents the idea of establishing the service model in China's university and college libraries. It consists of the following parts.1.The background and signification of knowledge service theory, including the origin of knowledge service, the meaning analysis of knowledge and information, the concept of knowledge service and information service together with their correlations, the status quo of research on knowledge service theory and practice both in China and abroad. This section sets the theoretical basis for the rest parts of this investigation.2.Discuss the inevitability of implementing knowledge service in libraries: including the college library collection——the rerecognition of explicit knowledge and tacit knowledge; rerecognition of college library service needs, that is to investigate students' and teachers' needs in the knowledge economy era; and rerecognition of the modern technologies and increasingly fractionized selwice contents.3.Case studies of knowledge service——take www.cnki.net as a knowledge service case; through the investigation into its resource storage, service content, service characteristics, this paper summarizes three implications from its knowledge service model.4.Discuss the establishment of knowledge service model in China's universities and colleges: its establishment is composed of three parts: first, build knowledge map——replace the traditional search model with individualized and non-linearized service model; second, suggest a individualized knowledge service model aiming at specialists, teachers, leading scholars in various fields, undergraduate students, graduate and postgraduate students; three, break a new communication path between users and librarians, enhancing the distinctness of explicit knowledge and elevation of tacit knowledge between users and librarians so as to deepen knowledge exploration and knowledge utilization.5.Discuss the strategies of knowledge service model: This part focuses on the problem of how to provide knowledge service efficiently and suggests strategies that can be applied to realize knowledge service. These strategies include transforming the traditional service concept and setting up a knowledge service management mechanism, improving knowledge service technology to reinforce knowledge storage, exploration and integration abilities, exerting the geographical and systemic advantages of college libraries to set up a cooperative system that realizes collaborative development and joint utilization, and forming a competent knowledge service faculty though organizational measures.6.Conclusion and expectation: This paper presents a thorough and comprehensive summarization to the establishment of knowledge service model in China's universities and colleges. In addition, it also enumerates certain problems in the future implementation of knowledge service model.
