The Design Of College Library’s Virtual Reference System

Reference service is one of the core businesses of library, and its essenceis to solve the various problems for the users when they searched andacquired the information. And reference service can provide the clues ofrelated literature and help the users search and acquire the literatureinformation they needed, and it can help the user master various the ways,methods and skills of searching for information and further cater for theirinformational needs. With the development of network and strengthen of thehabit of informational utilization, many libraries and informationalinstitutions joined the ranks to begin to provide the virtual reference serviceat home and abroad. Virtual reference service, also known as digital referenceservice, is new, which intensively reflects the advantages of computernetwork technology, library information resources and senior experts.The paper based above the situation to build a universities virtualreference system for the digital environment, and practical work had beendone as follows: First, according to the difference of Hengshui UniversityLibrary, the system included the reader service system, consultant system andsystem management and had a requirements analysis in detail for the systemfunction. Second, according to the different requirements and features of the users and managers, the virtual reference service platform and structuremodel had been established. Third, in the design section of the system, thereal-time reference was selected as the key and detailedly described the textcommunication and collaboration browsing, and the whole technicalframework of system had been built by choosing the J2EE platform and usingthe SSH+DWR framework. Finally, the paper introduced the developmentenvironment of the system and detailedly described the related functions ofthe system. However, part functions of the system had been realized, becauseof the limits of time and technology.
