University libraries are indispensable information providers, playing an important role in knowledge transmission and information providing. In the 21st century, with the dramatic development of information technology, human beings are fully exposed to an information era. College libraries, the essential information centers for teaching and research are currently needed to reform their traditional roles to modern ones, offering more efficient, accurate and quicker, fuller information service supported by the network.Operated with the network, the reference service system in the libraries has changed thoroughly from the surface to the core. Traditional reference service systems are limited by time, technology, communication methods and staff, functioning inadequately in the way of "one-to-one" service instead of "one-to-multiple". However, the development of network remedies these defects, offering abundant information resources and advanced ways for us to communicate. It also builds the new reference service system, that is, the virtual reference service system by integrating libraries, computer systems, databases and referrers. As the university libraries in the 21st century tend to provide information diversely, digitally and quickly, the major concern of people is shifted from libraries service to global information resources, from single system to multi-systems, from digital resources centers to digital service systems, and from single technology to its standardization.Based on the above, this dissertation mainly presents the development of the reference service system by featuring the network information and current situation of Chongqing University library. It applies CSCW in the virtual reference service system with an exploration at its related technologies, making an analysis of the virtual reference service system in Chongqing university library. The dissertation focuses on its system structure and collaborative reference service, with an analysis and application of users' approval and multi-users' collaboration, along with the mutual operation of the reference service system, electronic whiteboard, and Retrial managing systems. It is significant both theoretically and practically.
