Throughout the history of newspapers in the world, you can find that the news cartoon has developed as an important way of the press news reporting, also become as an indispensable part of the national journalism career. As a special way of news reporting, news cartoon plays more than like a sword role, especially at special historical stages of home and abroad. During the past hundred years, Chinese news cartoon has always focused and reviewed all aspects of the society with a unique vision, covered news about every major event, and guided people to know and think more with the power of humor. American news cartoon gives full play to the role of the media supervision from the date of birth, to a certain extent, it even becomes the leader of American public opinions and an integral part of American ideology and culture.In this paper, the contrast research of news cartoon between Chinese and American newspapers is the main theme. The most recent five years’award-winning news cartoons of Chinese journalism award and the Pulitzer prize, the highest award in China and the United States, were selected as the research samples. Combining with the theory of journalism, sociology and news cartoon, the characteristics, similarities and differences between Chinese and American cartoons were analyzed with the method of literature analysis, qualitative research and quantitative research. The paper also deeply explained the causes of similarities and differences between this two countries’ news cartoon, and summarized problems and challenges that the cartoon will be faced with during its future development. The purpose of this article is to make news cartoon get a better development during the changing media and society environment.This thesis is divided into six chapters. The first chapter mainly introduced the research origin, purpose, method, and the research status, significance, innovation. The second chapter described news cartoon’s development and evolution, which was based on interpretating definition of news cartoon so as to clearly explain the history of cartoons of China and the United States. The third chapter and the fourth chapter are the body of this paper. Basing on statistics and charts, the third chapter compared the subject matter, report tendency, function, and the published media of these two countries’news cartoon. By using content analysis method, the fourth chapter mainly contrasted news cartoon’s forms, creation techniques, and authors in order to explain characteristics of Chinese and American cartoons from the micro level. Chapter v from aspects of media ecological environment, the award selection mechanism, news values and thinking modes analyzed causes of similarities and differences presented by Chinese and American news cartoon. The last chapter introduced results of this research. It summarized similarities and differences between these two countries’ news cartoon, concluded problems and challenges that cartoons will be faced with, and summed up enlightenments of American news cartoon that can give references to China. Meanwhile, the deficiencies and future research direction about this paper were drawn with a brief conclusion.The paper research results show that Chinese and American news cartoons exist in some similarities and differences no matter in macroscopic aspect or in microscopic aspect. In subject matter choice, China focuses on social topics, America emphasizes political topics. The printed media of Chinese award-winning news cartoons are almost party newspapers, relatively lack of market-oriented media. American award-winning news cartoons are spread gradually from newspaper giants to local newspapers. American cartoons’ forms are diversiform, double and multiple frames are used maturely. But Chinese cartoons’ forms give priority to the single caricature. Affected by different cultures of China and the United States, news cartoons also show their local features. In addition, Chinese and American cartoon works also reflect some common features:pay attention to develop cartoons’ review function, emphasize cartoons’ militancy, lack of young cartoonists. On the other hand, news cartoons face some challenges such as network and new media’s impacts, professional cartoonist decline. The varied forms, unique techniques and perfect award mechanism of American news cartoon give lots of enlightenments and references to Chinese news cartoon, which is really worthy for Chinese cartoonists to learn.
