With the rapid development of network technology, a large number of networkdevices and complex network environments arise, resulting in the increasingimportance and complexity of network management. Simple Network ManagementProtocol (SNMP) based on TCP/IP, provides a unified interface and protocols fordevices of various kinds, produced by diverse companies, and of different types, whichgreatly improve the efficiency of network management and simplify administrator’swork. SNMP has become de facto standard of network management because of its easeof implementation. This project comes from a practical scientific research. It designs and implementsan efficient network management system based on SNMP to manage devices and itstraps, combined with techniques like automation generation tool ANTLR, MFCDocument/View Architecture, etc. Firstly, it introduces the related background of thesystem, and discusses the development and research status of network managementsystem. Secondly, it analyzes the architecture of SNMP and its important components, including Structure of Management Information (SMI), Management Information Base(MIB) and operations of SNMP. Finally, the framework of the network managementsystem based on SNMP is put forward, and then this paper respectively analyzes andstudies the four modules of this system, which are MIB structure module, grammaranalysis module, communication module, and management module. By configuringthe directory of a new device’s MIB definition files into the system’s initialconfiguration file, the system can load and parse the new device’s MIB files, and thenmanage the new device. It has been verified that the system can meet the basicrequirements of network management.
