With the rapid development of the technology of wireless networks, and continuous increase in type of the product and decrease in its cost, wireless network already raised the awareness of the users much than ever. Wireless networks have several unique characteristics such as agility, mobility and strong expandability. These characteristics are playing more and more important role in network application. Since wireless network shook off the tie of the wire, it has the advantage of no need to dispose the wire and has short fixing period and facility in maintain, its users are easy to move and add. With these virtues, wireless network can fully show its skill in circumstance that wired network can hardly implement.According to the characteristics of mobile devices in wireless networks, a new adaptive SNMP protocol model is proposed in this paper. The new model not only can be applied in traditional network management, but also can provide effective management for the devices in wireless networks.At first, this paper describes SNMP protocol and analyzes the SNMP management model, the basic frame, the flow of operations, the format of SNMP PDU and traditional trap sending scheme. It proposes two new methods of improving traditional trap sending scheme in SNMP protocol: trap classifying and trap merging. The combination of the two methods can process traps of different levels with different ways. The very emergent trap message is sent and acknowledged to make sure the reliable delivery, the common trap message is sent in standard way and the non-emergent trap messages are combined into a big one before being sent at the agent side. This new trap sending method has changed the traditional SNMP process pattern, so it has to change both the agent side and the manager side.According to the idea above, we implement the management functions of the new trap sending scheme with the traditional Manager/Agent model and make performance analysis about the new trap sending scheme in a typical scenario. The results show that, on the one hand the new trap sending scheme decreases the utilities of link bandwidth by 17% compared with the traditional one ,and on the other hand the reliability of emergent trap delivery is increased without any large increasing delay of dealing. The new trap sending scheme is also helpful in improving the flexibility of management, saving the resources of mobile devices and some other aspects.
