In recent years, with the rapid development of highway construction of our country, the traffic accident rate keeps rising, which is an ordeal for the highway traffic safety. Heavy fog, especially the sudden agglomerate fog will cause great interference to visibility, making a serious threat to traffic safety. Therefore, designing a real-time system to monitor the visibility of weather and make timely warning along the highway has a very important value.According to the requirement, a monitoring system suitable for highway fog detection is designed in this paper. First, the paper analyses the feasibility of using infrared for fog detection and ZigBee technology for data transmission. Then, according to the needs of the system, the paper put forward overall design scheme and specific hardware and software design scheme. In order to facilitate the design and maintenance, the whole process follows the modular design idea.This system mainly consists of coordinator device, routing devices and end devices, which use ZigBee and GPRS or Ethernet for data transmission. There are two processors in this system, LPC2378and CC2530, respectively. The system mainly comprises core control module, power module, data acquisition module, communication module and LCD module. The hardware design mainly includes chip selection and circuit design, while the software design involves the development of driver, corresponding application and monitoring terminal.In addition, this paper describes some low power consumption methods to deal with the problem of inadequate electricity supply of the actual occasion. The ultimate testing shows the system has basically realized the desired function.
