Collaborative design refers to the process in which product development teams concurrently and collaboratively develop some products in the form of group work and in the support of computer communication network. It has become a research hotspot for universities, software companies and manufacturing enterprises. The3D CAD and PDM technology are key technologies in achieving collaborative product design. The goal of this paper is to excavate the collaborative design idea that3D CAD contains, to analyze the mechanism of PDM product data sharing system and the design process as well as to establish a collaborative design platform that is both practical and forward-looking. The main researches in this paper are as follows:(1) The key technologies of building collaborative design platform is studied in this paper. At the same time, the function of3D CAD is analyzed and the structure mode of the collaborative design environment is studied on the basis of the PDM system. In addition, two kinds of data coordination mechanisms—"As needed" and "Scheduled time"—in the Solid Works Enterprise PDM are also analyzed. Besides, a collaborative design network model based on VPN is provided, which can work as a collaborative design platform for enterprises.(2) From the view of collaborative design, PDM system implementation techniques, including electronic warehouse planning, project and document management are discussed. The PDM system and CAX tools of integration are studied and an information sharing and collaborative work platform are constructed.(3) The function and status of design library in collaborative design are analyzed. The focuses are platform planning of the enterprise products and the technology of building design library. The methods and skills of building design library are discussed as well. Besides, the research on the application of parametric feature modeling technology, configuration technology and intelligent components technology in the process of building library are elaborated. At last, the management of the design library and the design of the data attribution cards are also studied.(4) The large equipment collaborative design strategy is discussed in this paper, and the skeleton model design based on the layout of sketch and the task decomposition methods based on skeleton model are studied as well. In addition, the product planning, the modular division, the task decomposition, and the top-down collaborative design parameter passing product collaborative development process and working mode are studied.
