With the improvement of production and design level of the manufacturing industry,more rigorous requirements are presented to mechanical product by more intensive marketcompetition. Knowledge, personalization and rapidness are becoming the key point for theenterprise to keep competitiveness in the intensive market competition. It becomes a newproject for the enterprise that how to effectively use the existing design resources to developnew products in a short time. A rapid design method for overhead traveling crane based onknowledge reuse is put forward in the paper, which aiming to realize rapid design byimproving reusing efficiency of the existing design knowledge, achieve the goal to shortenproducts design cycle, and enhance the ability of the enterprise to make a quick response tothe various market requirement.Research background and significance of the paper are introduced in detail, currentsituation of development about the overhead travelling crane and knowledge reuse at homeand abroad are expounded, main research contents and organizational structure of the paperare put forward.Design methods based on knowledge are studied, which including knowledge expression,obtaining and reasoning, contents and characteristics of the design knowledge about overheadtravelling crane are analyzed, and on this basis the corresponding design knowledge areexpressed by adopting coding representation, database representation, documentrepresentation and so on, knowledge library of the overhead traveling crane is finallyestablished.The key technologies and methods used in the process of the system development are deliberated, which including modular design, hybrid reasoning technology, automaticassembly technology of standard element based on RBR and configuration design. Moduledivision method, principle and interface technology of the overhead travelling crane areexpounded in detail, and module division is completed according its structure and functioncharacteristics. Research on overhead traveling crane based on knowledge reuse is carried onby adopting hybrid reasoning technology based on CBR and RBR.Under the support of theory about system architecture, system structure is established onthe basis of analyzing design objectives, functions, development tools and environment of thesystem. Each functional module and their implementation of the system are discussedthoroughly, management, parameter setting, finite element analysis and parametric modeldriven modules are emphatically stated. At last, rapid design system for the overhead travelingcrane is developed, and operation process of the system is briefly illustrated by taking a shortshaft welding drum set as an example.
