The Millimeter-wave inner field tester(inferred to inner field tester) is a automatic test system that developed for intermediate-level security system of the millimeter wave systems. It can test the capabilities and main indexes of the device of the millimeter wave systems, determine whether the device is fault, and isolate the fault to Shop Replaceable Unit.At present, most of the domestic and foreign automatic test system use GPIB+VXI/PXI hybrid bus architecture. VXI bus is an extension of VME(VERSA Module Eurocard bus) computer bus to the instrumentation/testing area, and PXI bus (Peripheral Component Interconnect) is an extension of PCI bus (including Compact PXI bus) to the instrumentation/testing area.The automatic test system which composed of modular instrument/equipment has a lot of advantages, such as high data transmission rate, huge date throughout capacity, small size, light weight and flexible, easy expansion and reusability of resources, high degree of standardization. In certain situation that some instruments appear without VXI (or PXI) bus modules, we can use GPIB bus to connect GPIB bus desktop instruments flexibly in the automatic test system based on VXI (or PXI bus) system.For particularity and function location of test object of the inner field tester, this paper introduced a engineering program to build low-cost automatic test system with PXI bus, combined with specific excitation source which is researched by ourselves. The main contents include the working principle, the distribution and demonstration of main indexes, the design of calibration testing, the design of the special excitation source, and the design of the testing software.
