Using the all-aluminum radiator as automotive radiator, it not only can improve structural strength of radiator and the efficiency, but also reduce the car weight. It has proven that this is an efficient method for car adapt to development of lightweight. In the manufacturing process of radiator, welding of radiator heads and core body is a very important welding process. The survey shows that lots of domestic automotive radiator manufacturers use manual TIG for radiator head welding in recent years. This method has lower welding efficient, no guarantee of weld quality and many other shortcomings.Under this background, according to the welding character of aluminum radiator head, we establish A-TIG welding process and develop a new automatic welding equipment that is used in aluminum radiator head. This equipment is mainly composed of mechanical and electrical two parts. In mechanical part, it consists of the main frame structure, positioning and clamping mechanism and welding car and other components,etc. The latter part is the core of this paper. We design a system control board that is used by C8051F020MCU as the core. And we establish a automatic control system, which is based on this control board. This system mainly consists of LCD subsystem, automatic welding subsystem, manual subsystem, welding parameter setting subsystem components. Through coordination control of each subsystem, it realizes control of external implementation of components, such as motor and welder etc. Then, it drives two welding guns that are set on the welding car for linear motion and realizes automatic welding to two long straight seams of radiator head. Among them, we adopt frequency conversion of motor speed for control of welding speed, which can meet the equipment for different welding speed adjustment and precise control requirements. Moreover, we design a mode of man-machine interaction for the equipment, which combine keyboard with LCD. Through this work mode, the operator can realize welding parameter setting, interface choice, and other functions, thus make operation more convenient. Finally, after completed the control system and the machine assembly, commissioning, we conducted welding process experiment, obtained the optimization of welding parameters. Then, we did experimental study of SEM and using performance inspection for weld seam of optimization parameters.Through the equipment test running, the result shows that the equipment machinery and control parts design is reasonable, reliable, stable, good welding quality, efficient welding and has complete functions. It can satisfy the welding process of Automobile aluminum radiator head and the request of service performance.
