As mobile communication has been developing rapidly in recent years, the number of base stations also increases remarkably. Due to the inherent characteristics of mobile communication, most base stations are built in upland to achieve the maximum coverage. Besides, almost all of the base stations are under unattended operation. Especially in remote rural areas with a large number of base stations, the maintenance force is weaker. Therefore, stations in such areas become the worst equipment rooms with the long time of malfunction and the poor security capacities. In recent years, pernicious cases such as the frequently occurred burglary of the base station have directly affected the safe and steady operation of the station. Meanwhile, the base stations are developing constantly and the structures of the equipment rooms are becoming increasingly complicated. Therefore, the equipment needed to handle and maintain increases sharply. As a result, monitoring base stations has become a vital approach to ensure that the mobile communication network works safely, soundly and economically. On the basis of studies on GPRS technology and the current situations of base station monitoring, the dissertation proposes a feasible GPRS-based monitoring system for base stations. The system utilizes the features of GPRS such as high availability of resource, high efficiency of data transmission and24hours on-line and combines with embedded system to realize the remote monitoring of base stations.First of all, the dissertation analyzed the key technologies used in GSM network of the second-generation mobile communication and relevant theories and technologies about GPRS wireless packet service. Therefore, the dissertation demonstrated the basic theories and technologies about monitoring system of base stations.Secondly, GPRS was applied into the monitoring of base stations. In accordance with demands of the monitoring systems in base stations, the dissertation designed a user-defined application layer protocol. On one hand, it could ensure the security of communication between monitor terminal of base stations and servers via proper safety protection. On the other hand, it could adapt to the special environment of the base stations. Considering the characteristics of the monitoring system of the base stations, the author adopted IMSI number of SIM card as the condition to judge whether the monitor terminal was connected or not. Meanwhile, according to modules such as image acquisition, alarm collection and card reader management, corresponding data frame format and communication mechanisms were drawn up. Therefore, the monitoring system of the base station could work efficiently. Finally, works had been done to establish the hardware and software development environment of monitoring system in the base stations and design each functional module in detail etc. Then, the monitoring system of the base stations were realized on S3C2440A development board. The main functions of the monitor terminal include:image acquisition, infrared sensors of the human body, entrance guard management, temperature and humidity alarm collection etc.GPRS is applied to the monitoring of base stations. It can provide real time information about network operation to facilitate the maintaining agent management and find out covert fault of network timely. Meanwhile, for operators, the overall monitoring of base station can also be realized, which will ensure the safe and steady operation of the network.
