With the development of society and economy, LED display has become one of theimportant information medium in the realm of production and life.With the development of wireless communication technology, in the modern informationlife, people want to improve the requirements of information technology to networking andwireless.Traditional information-updating was based on wire communication. It contained theupper position machine and the lower position machine. With computer (upper-machine)series port and LED display control hardware, it can realize information-updating. But whenhundreds or more LED screens will be updated same information, every LED display withone upper-machine was expensive and wasted. For this reason, research oninformation-updating system of LED display base on wireless long distance control is veryuseful and necessary now.GPRS(General Packet Radio Service) is a packet oriented mobile data service on the2Gand3G cellular communication system’s global system for mobile communications (GSM).GPRS terminals are more widely, because of the high-speed data transfer rate, the seamlessconnectivity with IP network, the charges by traffic, and always-on. The design uses GPRS aswireless communication interface for wireless data transmission of LED display system.GPRS terminal uses TCP/IP protocol to carry out the wireless communication of LED displaythrough Internet.The LED display controller is composed of microcontroller, GPRS module, and LEDdisplay. The paper analyses the limitations of traditional control methods, and introduceGPRS overview and technical characteristics. Then the paper introduces overall design andarchitecture of the system, and discusses the hardware and software design of LED displaycontroller. The experiment shows that LED display controller could communicate with thehost computer (upper machine) by GPRS module. The LED display controller receives andprocesses the information, then drives the LED display by required.This design can broaden the applications of the LED display, has a certain value.
