Currently China is in the process of transforming into an industrial and informationsociety from an agricultural society, and public media has become the key to accelerate thetransformation with unquestionable importance. Therefore, the media literacy education thataims in developing the awareness of criticism on public media and teaching the public on howto correctly understand and use media has gradually show its importance.Although the new rural construction is in full swing, the media literacy education amongrural elementary and middle schools has not been paid enough attention, which causes thelack of media literacy among elementary and middle school students in rural areas, and isharmful to the socialism new rural construction. As related research develops, this situationhas drawn the attention of the experts, and the kind of research is getting into the exploratoryand experimental phase.This article uses both theoretical and empirical approaches to research and explore thesituation of media literacy education among elementary and middle schools in rural areas. Theintroduction part summarizes situations of media literacy education at home and abroad, fromboth theoretical and empirical aspects. Section1first analyses related concepts of medialiteracy education, then it summarizes its origin, development, research paradigm and content.Then, it simply describes the models of media literacy education in some developed countriesand areas. In section2, this paper discusses the media environment in rural areas under thenew rural construction from the media development aspect, and analyses some problems fromthe media environment in rural areas. Section3mainly shows media literacy conditionsamong elementary and middle school students in Liaoning province with empiricalinvestigations, and analysis some expressions of the lack of media literacy among studentsand look into its reasons. In section4, the paper proposes strategies on how to develop themedia literacy education among elementary and middle school students in rural areas in ourcountry. This article shows that, we can better develop media literacy education with our ownChinese characteristics only through the joined participation of classes, the society, andfamilies.
