ZigBee developed by the ZigBee Alliance is a wireless communication technology based on the IEEE802.15.4protocol. It has the characteritics of low cost, low data rate, short distance, latency and high security. ZigBee has become a hot technology among wireless communications in short-distance and small amount of data transmission.Meter-reading by manual in residential area is the traditional mode which is time consuming and laborious, low efficiency and it cannot fit the need of the social development. Therefore, automatical meter-reading technology has become an important topic today. This paper studies wirless meter-reading system based on Zigbee。This paper introduces the meter-reading system based on Zigbee as following. The first part introduces the basic theory of the ZigBee protocol, including the types of network, network formations, address assignments, routing managements and security mechanisms. Two basic electricity agreements DL/645and GDW376.2and their data formats and transmission are also introduced in detail in the first part. The second part focuses on Z-stack which is a specific form of implementation of TI’s ZigBee protocol, including the overall architecture of Z-stack, the code corresponding to layers and application framework. The third part focuses on the design of the whole meter-reading system, including the hardware and software needed. Six hardware functional modules, including power module, indication module, serial port module, JTAG module,resonant module,control module, are designed and implemented and the software needed are developed based on CC2430.This paper also proposes a new address allocation mechanism:address allocation method with segmented model. The address allocation mechanism and routing mechanism of the mechanism are introduced in detail. The new address allocation mechanism is simple and easy to implement.
