With the development of Information Technology (IT), the traditional manual meter reading system without developed IT technology has many shortages, such as the power consumption data cannot be got instantly and exactly. It is more and more prominent and has become the bottleneck of the power management modernization.Wireless meter reading is one method to read and process data automatically by using the technology of wireless network. It aims to increase the automation level of meter reading system, and to meet the rapid development of network and communication technology. It can not only ease the meter-reading people's labor intensity, reduce the errors caused by human factors, but also have high speed and good real-time.Zigbee is a newly developed global standard for wireless communications, with the characteristics of low cost, low power consumption, low data transfer rate. In recent years, the technology spreads out in the world very quickly. The advantages of this technology such as energy-saving, low cost, large network capacity, short time delay, reliable and flexible working band could just meet the needs of the wireless meter reading system.In this paper, we first researched the background of this subject and compared the characteristics of existing meter-reading methods. The research on situation and development of the meter reading technology based on Zigbee are also expounded. Second, we dissected stack level function of the Zigbee protocol, data transfer mode from the physical layer, MAC layer, network layer and application layer. Then the design program of wireless meter reading system that including the overall framework of the system, the functions and advantages of each module were described. The network transmission mechanism and data format of this wireless meter reading system were designed from below factors, such as the view of networking mode, routing protocol, routing process and the Zigbee network establishment. Finally, we realized the Zigbee wireless meter reading system, by using hardware equipment and Jennic environment to develop various modules of this system, thus gave the test and validation results.The testing results verified the feasible of Zigbee wireless meter reading system that we designed in this thesis. Our experiments show that our proposed solution achieves the design requirement with satisfying flexibility and expansibility.As a practical application to pre-implement the principle, current well-functioning network experiments were completed among small scales. The study of wireless Zigbee network provides a novel system development platform, and has good market prospects. The automatic wireless meter reading system will lead the way in the future, not only because it strengthen the administration on energy consumption, but also raise efficiency of energy supply, which is meaningful to improve the administration standard and economic benefits in mutiple fields.
