Virtual reality technology can create virtual environment for users to experience. It has a wide range of applications in military and aerospace industry, medical, educational, architectural design and urban planning and many other fields. Virtual scene roaming is an important branch of the virtual reality technology and has developed rapidly in the construction, tourism, gaming, aerospace, medical and other industries. Virtual scene roaming is divided into a virtual tour of the real scene and a virtual tour of the virtual scene. The former is mostly used for military, while the latter has a wide range of applications in many areas, including military.Our virtual roaming system acquires the positions and orientations of the moving objects in the real scenes from the high-precision location and tracking system developed by Chinese Academy of Sciences Institute of Automation, and then uses this information to drive the movement of the virtual model. Compared with the traditional virtual roaming system, this system uses a helmet-mounted display as output device which isolates the user’s view, so that the user is completely immersed in the scene.It has two important steps to build the system:build the virtual scene and fuse the virtual scene and real data. The Virtools is good software to create and edit three-dimensional virtual scene, however it doesn’t have the capability to model the scene. So in this paper, we model the virtual scene with3ds max, and then the virtual scene are exported with.nmo files which can be recognized by Virtlools. Since there are differences between coordinate system of experimental site and coordinate system of Virtools virtual scene, we develop a Building Block with Virtools SDK, which translating the output data from coordinate system of experimental site to coordinate system of virtools virtual scene.This system allows user to interact with virtual environment immersively. Compared to non-immersion roaming system, it can provide high realism and immersion. Therefore, the system can be applied in interior decoration, game design, entertainment and other industries.
