Objective: This study focuses on the sources of occupational pressure on nurses inurban hospitals in Suzhou. It analyzes and evaluates the occupational pressure on thenurses, discusses the factors affecting the occupational pressure and finds out the mainproblems and existing conflicts. It aims at alleviating the pressure on the nurseoccupation and putting forward countermeasures and suggestions for the hospitalnursing management for the benefit of people’s health and well-being.Method: Retrieve relevant literature and form relevant theory review. With thestratified cluster random sampling method, a questionnaire survey was conductedamong the nurses in six urban hospitals in Suzhou City. A total of789questionnairesreturned were valid. EpiData3.02database software was used for data entry andSPSS18.0statistical software was used for data analysis, including descriptive analysis,variance analysis, etc.Result: Through the survey and the obtained statistics, the average score ofoccupational pressures on nurses in urban hospitals in Suzhou was133.86±25.54, witha minimum of69, a maximum of210and the median was134. The Fifth People’sHospital scored highest in total, i.e.165.50±26.50, followed by Suzhou UniversityAffiliated Children’s Hospital, the Second Affiliated Hospital of Suzhou University,Suzhou Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine, the Third Hospital in XiangchengDistrict and Loufeng Hospital, SIP (which scored126.19±26.62). The pressure onnurses in specialist hospitals scored highest from different dimensions of pressure andtotal pressure. The score of the total pressure was137.07±26.16. The pressure on nursesin comprehensive hospitals scored the second highest. The score was132.20±24.56. Thescores for university affiliated hospitals were higher than those for municipaltertiary-level hospitals. The scores were135.97±25.81and133.53±25.20respectively.The pressure on nurses in community hospitals scored the lowest,126.19±23.75.Among the influencing factors of the occupational pressure on nurses, the length ofsleep, the conditions of health and physical exercise and the times of night shifts are statistically significant concerning the score of total pressure. P value was <0.01. Theprofessional title, marriage, number of children and years of working make significantdifferences in some dimensions and total score. P value was <0.05. Age, education,establishment status and income make no significant differences on nurses’ pressurescores. P value was>0.05. Independent variables, including the hospital, the times ofnight shifts, gynecological diseases and the length of sleep, were tested separately. Theyaffect the dependent variable, i.e. total pressure score, significantly. The P values were0,0,0and0.001respectively.Conclusion:1. The pressure on nurses working in specialist hospitals is greaterthan that on those working in comprehensive hospital. The pressure on nurses workingin university affiliated hospitals is greater than that on those working in municipaltertiary-level hospitals. Nurses working in community hospitals have the lowestpressure level.2. The Fifth People’s Hospital (infectious disease hospital), SuzhouUniversity Affiliated Children’s Hospital, the Second Affiliated Hospital of SuzhouUniversity, Suzhou Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine, the Third Hospital inXiangcheng District and Loufeng Hospital, SIP score from the highest to the lowestconcerning occupational pressure on nurses working in them.3. The main factorsaffecting the pressure on nurses are the times of night shifts, the hospital one works in,the health condition, the length of sleep, the number of children and family situations.Countermeasures and suggestions:1. The managers of hospitals need to realizethe status quo of occupational pressure existing in the nurse occupation and theimportance and urgency to carry out effective countermeasures.2. It is necessary tostrengthen the construction of nursing staff and supporting systems and to arrange thenursing reasonably, reducing non-nursing work.3The nurses’ ability to cope withpressure and to study independently should be enhanced and career planning should beguided.4. Support from family and society and creation of favorable social environmentare beneficial.5. Trainings on pressure management need to be conducted andinterventions can be carried out if necessary.
