Study On Landscape Design Of Small-size Public Spaces In Xi’an

Outdoor activities are very important for ciril residents’ daily life. Citizen’s dailyactivities depend on all kinds of spaces and places in the city. With the urban expansionand the increasing building density, public spaces for outdoor activities are getting lessand less. The landscape design of small-size public spaces becomes more and moreimportant in urban design.In recent years, the cityscape of Xi’an changed gradually and formed a new patternwhich is the old city in the center, the developing zones in the surrounding areas, suchas the Qujiang district, Fengwei district, Changan district, etc. Small-size public spacesare the essential components of city public areas which could fulfill the need ofharmonized living environment of the local citizens. Small-size public spaces are theextension of urban design, and they are crucial for enhancing the local people’s qualityof life.This paper is the study of the landscape design of small-size public spaces in Xi’an.Firstly, it is the definition and characteristics of small-size public spaces. Secondly, it isthe case studies which based on the study of the small squares, small parks and smallcommercial streets. And finally, by comparing the differences between the small-sizepublic spaces which located in the old city area and new developing zones, the author istrying to find the problems which exist in the small-size public spaces landscape designin Xi’an.The analysis of the landscape design of small-size public spaces in Xi’an isarranged in a proper sequence: on the macro level, it is the analysis of the developingcontext of the spatial pattern of Xi’an city; on the medium level, it is the case study ofseveral small size public spaces; on the micro level, it is the detailed analysis of terrain issues, plants issues, water issues, etc. All these analysis are trying to provide advisablesuggestions for professional designers.
