Study On The Protection And Renewal Of Traditional Commercial

Most small and medium towns in northwest China have a long history. The traditional commercial street with a unique feature is a kind of historical commercial block. The traditional physical landscape, commercial culture and the street life are the cultural treasure for the street history, and have an important historical and cultural value.With the rapid development of the town, the social background and economical structure of the town, and the ideas & manners about life of the town have been changed. The existing traditional commercial street does not adapt to the life of the modern people. Problems like the aging of buildings, the antiquated infrastructure and the deteriorating environment of inhabitancy, emerged increasingly. But in the rebuilding process, because of the shortage in realizing the synthesized value of the traditional commercial street, blind removing and building, the environment quality of the street space in the northwest has been worsen. Also the features of the territory has disappeared, and the inhabitant's feeling of identity to the loacal area has collapsed. With these facts, it is an important problem for city construction to protect and renew the traditional commercial street.In recent years, though there have been some protection and renewal work for the traditional commercial street, the actuality is not optimistic. Blocks faced the conflict between the environment renewal and the conservation of historic buildings.This is the reason why the protection and renewal work did not fufilled thoroughly. Therefore, it is a vital question for traditional Commercial Street to promote the development of the traditional commercial street simultaneously with the evolution of modern social life. This is the most difficulty for the protection and renewal work.In this paper, first we analyzed and summarized the values of traditional Commercial Street from two aspects, the social and cultural identity aspect and thematerial feature aspect of the traditional commercial street in small and medium towns in northwest.Then we studied the example of JinCheng Street in HanCheng city, investigated the realities and problems of the JinCheng Street.And we provided the "Small-scale and active pattern renewal andpreservation method" for the JinCheng street to protect the historical environment and style chareristics of this traditional commercial street. So there will be a positive cycle for the street with "organic renewal". After that, we made a reasonable design for JinCheng street to prove that the "Small-scale and active pattern renewal and preservation method" is applicable for Jin Cheng street and even all the traditional commercial street in small and medium towns in northwest.
