Xi’an Small-scale Street Square Design

In recent years, with the rapid growth of economy, urbanization level enhancesunceasingly, and there are more and more problems about our urban public space.People live in cold concrete jungle, where is full of lust, so there is no harmoniousneighborhood, and no geographical identity. We are in the process of urbanization andbecome sorehead. Therefore, the planning and designing of urban public space isincreasingly important. Square is an important public place which would gather people,increase people for communicating and increasing neighborhood emotion. A variety ofreasons led to the modern city, however, only focusing on the big central squares, andregarding them as the city business cards and record them as huge projects to build. Onthe other aspect, not caring so much about street squares. But street square is the mostcommon, application forms, and it is also the most popular place in the city. Due to thehot wave of urban construction, with the improvement of people’s living conditions, thedesire of Street Square becomes stronger and stronger. In the whole urban planning,with the influence of the function, there is almost no space or only a small space forstreet squares. As the most dynamic part of urban public space, smaller street scale isuniversal. Therefore, it is necessary to explore the characteristics and expressions ofsmall scale square. This paper mainly refers to the street squares which are the smallspaces on both sides of the city roads, in the front of buildings or feature-rich publicopen space. From a functional point of view, this kind of form belongs to the city’saffiliated square street square, with no obvious characteristics, randomizing strongly. In this paper, the existing urban street space in Xi ’an research based on thepractical design of Chang’an area small scale street square is taken as an example,analysis street square design methods and attention problems from the streets andsquares, from different angles and viewpoints. Discusses the existence value of smallscale street square, space characteristic and design expression.
