ZigBee technology is a short distance, low complexity, low power consumption, low data rate and low-cost two-way wireless communication technology. It plays an irreplaceable role in various application areas such as sensor networks, positioning and data transmission. As a result, ZigBee technology has attracted intense interest in current applications of the Internet of Things (IoT).Another advantage of ZigBee wireless network is its superior flexibility of network construction. However, it is worthy of noting that ZigBee wireless network is basically only suitable for short-distance data transmission. So the data transmission through ZigBee network is usually constrained by geographical conditions. If we combine ZigBee with the General Packet Radio Service (GPRS) technology, we can not only keep the wireless network construction flexibility, but also realize better interaction with users via the short message service (SMS) provided by the GPRS module. In this thesis, we introduce the current status and developing tendency of ZigBee technology used in IoT applications firstly. Then, the structure and functions of the Z-stack are described in detail. Aiming at the positioning and alarming applications in a tourism case, we perform the feasibility analysis of designing a wireless positioning application system by combining ZigBee with GPRS technology, and elucidate the practical value of the system. Finally, we complete the hardware and software designing and testing of the system. At the beginning of the system design part, we introduce the details of constructing a ZigBee network, including the network address assignment, sub-nodes joining the network and route selection. Then we design the peripheral circuit of the CC2430 wireless communication chip developed by Texas Instrument Incorporation and explain the functions of nodes in the ZigBee network. The interface circuits for GPRS, MSP430 and ZigBee modules are also designed. Then, we develop software of the system for realizing the positioning function on the terminal positioning card, displaying map on PC and sending short messages when receiving the alarming information from the positioning card. Finally, the functions of the whole system are tested. Testing results indicate that the map-display software can display the card position correctly on the map. When the alarming button is pressed, the corrseponding alarming response can appear instantly on the map, and the cell phone bound to the positioning card can receive the correct alarm information. So, the wireless positioning application system developed by combining ZigBee with GPRS technology can effectively solve the personal positioning problem in the group tourism, and it can be furthermore extended to other practical applications conveniently where the positioning of users is required.
