Pulse compression is mainly used in modern radar system for distance detection and target recognition. Woodward perfect theoretically the idea of pulse compression, by proposing that the use of matched filter to compress the signal with large Time-Bandwidth Product would make the output more narrow. Thanks to the narrowness of output signal, the resolution of distance detection would be improved, simultaneously, the pulse will be more broaden with equal resolution of distance so that the average of emitting power will be increased. This proceed can lead a good performance in the distance, so that the contradiction between the distance and resolution can be settled.At present, it is known by domestic that the use of DSP as the main process chip in pulse compression system, and multiple DSP in parallel to achieve high performance are prevailing. By the development of PLD, the advantage of FPGA in digital signal process is more and more obvious comparing to DSP, especially in the pulse compression system. Obviously, the parallel using of multiple DSP chips can't meet the compact and low-power dissipation needs. The main purpose of this article is develop a simple structure, fast processing speed and high precision real-time pulse compression system based on FPGA as the core processing chip.In this paper, the feature of the LFM signal's time-domain and frequency-domain was introduced at first, and then theoretical analyses of pulse compression system were described with its method of the realization in hardware platform. At the same time, FFT theory were brought in. Finally, the frequency-domain method were chosen to realize the pulse compression system.The main job of this paper is:1. It is showed that what is the basic concept of pulse compression, which key element is needed in the hardware of pulse compression system, and what is the sampling theory.2. According to the requirements, the chips were selected, and the methods of using them were described.3. The FPGA-based pulse compression system was designed , and the detailed comparison between the Matlab simulations and the tests of the hardware system was done, which results were analyzed.
