Nursing development depends on the cause of nursing research and utilization of research and nursing scientific research is considered to be the basis for development of Nursing Science. However, there is a very big gap in nursing research compared with other areas of medical research in China, especially nursing research in clinical nursing staff is very difficult, which displays low levels. Therefore, how to deal with adverse factors affecting development of nursing research in clinical nurses, to promote nursing scientific research activities positively, actively, or caringly, is one of the important issues placed in front of nursing administrators and nursing research. It is the prerequisite for improving the current situation of nursing research lags and guaranteeing the sound development of nursing science by studying on the scientific research ability level of clinical nursing staff and its influential factors.AimsThis research was designed to investigate the current situation of the research and research ability level of clinical nursing personnel in Hubei Province teaching hospitals, and to examine how individual socio-demographic characteristics variables to this intent, as well as to explore the main reasons leading to clinical nursing personnel research difficulties. The purpose was to provide scientific basis and references for taking the effective measures by nursing managers even superior health sector, and thus increasing the level of clinical nurses' scientific research capacity, finally, promoting the development of nursing research, as well as promoting hospital nursing research work.MethodThis study used self-made general questionnaire, nursing scientific research questionnaire, obstacle factor questionnaire and the rating scale of nurses'scientific research ability designed by Liu Ruishuang in the Ministry of health in Beijing hospital to investigate 600 registered nurses who worked more than a year from four teaching hospitals in Hubei Province. Samples were got by convenient. At last, the questionnaire results used the EPIDATA3.1 software database and SPSS15.0 statistical analysis software package. This study used specific statistical methods such as: descriptive statistical analysis, the Chi-square test, Wilcoxon rank test, Kruskal-Wallis test and multivariate Logistic stepwise regression.Results1. Most clinical nursing personnel had research wishes strongly. There were significant differences found in proportion of writing papers and publishing papers among marital status, final educations, title, position, work post, working years, and labor relations; significant differences were found in proportion of writing papers between gender and research attitude; and the solutions of new questions showed significant differences on different final education. Similarly, there were significant differences found in research motive among age, marital status, education, title, position, work years, and labor relations.2. The top 10 entries of nursing staff's obstacle factors were: work pressure, lack of research funding, lack of scientific research-based knowledge, lack of time, the low social status of nurses, lack of infrastructure, lack of research atmosphere in department, diversified nurse role resulted in undertaking nursing scientific research impossibly, lack of motivation, and low nursing staff.3. The level of scientific research ability of clinical nursing staff in total (33.12) was low, and papers writing scores were at medium levels, while the rest of the dimension were in low levels. Relatively speaking, the scores of papers writing and research-based knowledge were higher while statistical knowledge and statistical software operating scored lower.4. Single-factor analysis of scientific research ability and respective side of research ability showed results as follow:(1) Some variables, such as age, gender, education, title, position, work post, working years, and labor relations, made the general score in scientific research ability different significantly.(2) Some variables, such as age, gender, education, and working years, made the score in operating statistical software ability different significantly.(3) Some variables, such as age, marital status, education, title, position, work post, working years, and labor relations, made the score in writing papers ability different significantly.(4) Some variables, such as age, gender, education, title, position, working years, and labor relations, made the score in research-based knowledge ability different significantly.(5) Some variables, such as gender, education, and position, made the score in statistical knowledge ability different significantly.(6) Some variables, such as whether nursing staff write papers and whether they publish papers, made the score in respective side of research ability different significantly, and the score of those who had written papers and published papers was comparatively higher.(7) Some variables, such as conditions of reading journals and participation in scientific research training, made the score in respective side of research ability different significantly, and the score of those who often read journals and participate in academic training was comparatively higher.5. Multivariate analysis of scientific research ability and respective side of research ability showed factors as follow:(1) Factors of general scores in scientific research ability: gender, title, whether writing papers, whether reading nursing periodicals and taking part in academic training. (2) Factors of operating statistical software ability: gender, title, position, and work years.(3) Factors of writing papers ability: whether writing papers and taking part in academic training.(4) Factors of research-based knowledge ability: position, whether writing papers and taking part in academic training.(5) Factors of statistical knowledge ability: final education, whether writing papers and taking part in academic training.Conclusion1. Clinical nursing personnel of teaching hospital generally had strong wishes to carry out nursing research, and married with children, postgraduate and above, Deputy Director of the Nurse and over, head nurse and above, nursing management positions, work 21 years above, and formal staff had higher proportion to write and publish nursing papers obviously, besides, the proportion to write nursing papers of male and personnel who were willing to participate in nursing research was significantly higher than female and those who do not want to participate in scientific research.2. On motivation of scientific nursing research, the assessment title promotion for postgraduate and above, head nurse and above, senior title and formal staff can promote nursing research capacity level, while the need in self-realization and knowledge for younger, shorter working years, unmarried, nurses and contract nurses was strong; additionally, nurses and postgraduate and above payed more attention to improving the quality of patient care.3. The research revealed that the endogenous scientific research obstacles greater than exogenous obstacles in evaluating obstacle factors of scientific research.4. Overall level of research capacity was at low levels, and papers writing scores were at medium levels, while the rest of the dimension were in low levels. Relatively speaking, the scores of papers writing and research-based knowledge were higher while statistical knowledge and statistical software operating scored lower within the four types.5. Single-factor analysis of scientific research ability and respective side of research ability showed influence factors as follow:(1) On the scientific research ability total scores, those who had written and published nursing papers and ofen read journals and participated in academic training, 31~40 years old and above 51 years old, male, postgraduate and above, Deputy Director of the Nurse and over, head nurse and above, nursing management positions, work 11~15 years, and formal staff scored relatively higher.(2) On the statistical software operating scores, those who had written and published nursing papers and ofen read journals and participated in academic training, 18~30 years old and above 51 years old, male, postgraduate and above, work 1~5 years and 11~15 years scored relatively higher.(3) On the papers writing scores, those who had written and published nursing papers and ofen read journals and participated in academic training, 41~50 years old, married, postgraduate and above, Deputy Director of the Nurse and over, head nurse and above, nursing management positions, work 21 years above , and formal staff scored relatively higher.(4) On the research-based knowledge scores, those who had written and published nursing papers and ofen read journals and participated in academic training, 31~40 years old, male, postgraduate and above, Deputy Director of the Nurse and over, head nurse and above, work 11~15 years and 16~20 years, and formal staff scored relatively higher.(5) On the statistical knowledge scores, those who had written and published nursing papers and ofen read journals and participated in academic training, male, postgraduate and above, and head nurse and above scored relatively higher.6. Personal characteristics affected the scores of research capacity, statistical software operation, papers writing, research-based knowledge and statistical knowledge, especially male, head nurse and above, and those who wrote nursing papers and regularly read periodicals and participated in academic training got to obtain the possibility of a large high total score; male, Deputy Director of the Nurse and above , head nurse and above, and those who participated in academic training regularly were to get the possibility of high statistical software operation scores; the longer working life, the greater likehood of low scores; those who wrote nursing papers and participated in academic training got to obtain the possibility of high papers writing scores; head nurse and above, those who wrote nursing papers and participated in academic training got to obtain the possibility of high research-based knowledge scores; postgraduate and above, and those who wrote nursing papers and participated in academic training regularly got to obtain the possibility of high statistical knowledge scores.7. Clinical nursing personnel research ability need further improvement, especially nursing managers should strengthening education and training of male nurses, make nursing research motivation of nursing personnel upright, encourage nursing personnel to participate in continuing education of qualifications, encourage to write papers, pay attention to the training and guidance of young nursing personnel, bring head nurse into playing in lead role, encourage staff to read journals, to participate in multiple form of academic training, so as to improve clinical nursing personnel of research ability level finally .
