Electronic book (hereinafter E-book) is a novel type of books, disseminated through Internet, provided with digital contents, various of formats and functions, and have to read on digital devices such as computers, mobile phones, E-book readers. E-book held the advantages that beyond comparison of traditional books, such as prompt dissemination, multi-media, convenient retrieval, small storage space and large resources sharing space. With the development of E-books, there are a great number of free E-books emerged on the Internet, scattered and inconvenient for user searching and utilization. Thus the intellectual merit of E-books can't be expressed completely.This article overviewed the definitions of E-books, the invention and development history and related technological research. Summarized and analyzed the produce models and formats, use patterns and free levels, source networks of E-books and issues existed through Internet investigation. Then investigate the medical libraries domestic and overseas to see their utilization of free E-books and use patterns. There launched a user survey to understand the users'preference of reading and reading habits, awareness and assessment for free E-books. And put forward several considerable suggestions for medical libraries in the after section, and discussed the strengths and weaknesses of the four usage mode integrated with demo of the examples. The article did some primary exploration for free E-books in the field of biomedical science, in the hope that enlightening the free resources construction of libraries under the network environment.
