There are many parts that have the same geometric topology but different specifications in product design. It will take a big waste of time to redesign and model these parts each time. Through building a parameterized parts library, the entiprise can resue the existing resources to spare the unnecessary, mechanical and repeated effort in research. This can help entiprises to improve their design efficiency and reduce design and manufacturing costs. This thesis is a study on the database design of the 3-dimentional parameterized parts library with dynamic expansion. Using the newly built database, a parts library was implemented based on Pro/E.The main content includes:1. By giving an introduction to the status quo of parameterized parts library application development, we point out the remaining problems and analyze the reason. As a result, the importantce of constructing a background database is known.2. Because a parts library relies on a specific CAD system, the parts information model which is fit for parts library is built on the basis of the information model for CAD system. In this thesis, parts geometric information is held in the model file of CAD system, parts parameters is organized in the way defining main parameters to encapsulate common parameters.3. Based on the comparative analysis of two traditional modes how parameters were storaged in a database, a new mode which combines the advantages of both is proposed. Through this mode, the parameters and specs of different parts can be expressed in a uniform way which guantees the dynamic expansion of a parts library.4. The database is implemented on SQL Server 2000. Also, the security design and performance optimation are realized.5. Through the second development of Pro/E, a generic parameterized parts library system with dynamic expansion is built based on the database. The system is designed by object-oriented modeling approach and implemented by following the thinking of the development of software engineering, so it is reusable.
