There are many changes in current decades. Developing computer technologies and Internet brings great evolutions to society, while world economy is so booming that the global market grows up.All the factors above change the mode of produce in the contemporary manufacturing industry so that the traditional Mass Production has been turning into Mass Customization (MC). And more and more manufacturing enterprises start to adopt internet-based manufacturing system to carry out their cooperative product development process. In this paper all the research work focuses on the following four topics:Theory and methodology of SPL (Similar Parts Library) development; The internet-based framework of SPLS (Similar Parts Library System ) for network cooperative design; The integrated framework of similar parts library to network cooperative design system as well as their key enable technologies; The research of relationship between similar parts library and mass customization, the both contributions of similar parts library to product design for modularity, and to distributed networked manufacturing system.A special Web-based framework of similar parts library system is presented in this paper in order to meet the need for the information of manufacturing resources which is a part of the new contemporary networked manufacturing environment. The characteristics of the framework are detailedly analyzed and two kinds of the mode applied to internet environment is put forward and researched. This paper presents a special similar parts library system that can meet the requirements for data resources of parts in all phases of the whole product process. The parts library is a resources system which could support the whole life of product development. It is the foundation of developing the similar parts library system that the information model of part is defined perfectly and completely.Large quantity of drawings of machinery parts are collected, and all kinds of these parts' shapes are studied and analyzedthoroughly. As the results, thousands kinds of parts' features are extracted. By means of the similitude principle of GT (Group Technology),all the parts are classified into different kinds similar families according to similarity of their features,Then Object-Oriented theory is applied to describe parts with these features. Then the number system of the similar parts classified established on the base of it according to the theory of Group Technology. All these work completed successfully to support sharing and transmission of parts information by means of Internet. The Least Square Principle is employed to judge the similarity and calculate the similarity degree between two parts. And on the base of it the system can output several reference candidates as a result which is most closed to the demanded part. It solves the problem that other system can not offer any candidate as a reference result in the case there is no one suited to the demanded part.Particularly the key enable technologies of integrated model of parts library system combined with network cooperative design system are researched and studied. On the base of the theories and methodologies presented above,a simulation environment of internet-based cooperative design is established and a prototype of small web-based Similar Parts Library system developed. Operation behaviors of remote access, index and transmission on part information have been accomplished successfully under the support of the web-based Similar Parts Library system. The optimal selection is realized by this prototype system from many feasible candidates by means of calculating similarity degree of similar parts indexed. Theories and method above are verified. All those results prove that the research is successful and effective.
