Because of the rapid development of Internet services and the coming of various new services, the requirements of network bandwidth are increasing more rapidly, traditional access network becomes the bottleneck of the whole transmission network. EPON (Ethernet Passive Optical Network) is a leading technology basing upon Ethernet and PON to implement broadband applications and multi-services in the future. It has a point-to-multipoint architecture and provides multi-services based on Ethernet. It combines the advantages of PON technology and Ethernet technology. With its features of high bandwidth, low cost and could be used and updated easily, EPON becomes the best solution for the next generation access network. With EPON international standard IEEE802.3ah was released in 2004, the EPON industry union has attracted many manufactures to participate in actively. FTTH (Fiber to the home) in north America and Japan has already been expanded on a large scale. EPON RFC was released in 2005, and the experiments of FTTH has been started at some places in China. So many interfaces and OLTs and ONUs bring on more operations and complexity to network management. So, it is very important to provide a reliable network management system in order to ensure the stabilization and efficiency of EPON system. And there is no doubt that SNMP, which is simple, universal and mature, should be the best management protocol to EPON.The architecture of EPON system is analyzed and SNMP, hardware platform, embedded system are introduced in the thesis. The software architecture of EPON EMS (Element Management System) is designed according to the features of EPON. EMS is based upon SNMP (Simple Network Management Protocol), which cooperates with OAM to implement management. The software architecture contains SNMP Manager and SNMP Agent, the working flow of SNMP Manager and SNMP Agent are designed, and function modules which contains configuration, performance, security, trouble and expense are defined.EMS database and client software are designed and implemented according to the needs. Choosing MySQL RDMS (Relationship Database Management System) to design and create datasheets as well as database, then the interface between background process and MySQL database are implemented. Client software which contains GUI (Graphic User Interface) and background process are designed according to the requirements of management function modules as well as Human-Computer Interaction Theory. Considering the compatibility and expansibility to choose Java and Eclipse IDE (Integrated Development Environment). JNI (Java Native Interface) is used by the background process to create DLL (Dynamic Link Library), which transfers SNMPAPI to manage EPON system.
