During the past few years, both information flow and work flow have gone into office automation and information management, electronic governmental affairs, electronic official business, MIS and CRM development at a fast speed. One of them had become a kind of choice or a developing trend to modern office. Each enterprise made its own OA system according to its characteristic. This paper studied the main characteristics of smart client, aiming at the special request of science and technology book publication enterprise, applying smart client reasonably in OA systems, making the biggest degree of technique ground serve for the work.There have been two kinds of architectures of OA systems which are C/S and B/S. The application of C/S architecture deploy very difficult, also be disadvantageous on update and maintenance. OA system of the B/S architecture depends on the network excessively. It cannot be used when the connection is lost.The clou of modern office automation or information management are, helping enterprises to implement the workflow electronically, and changing the process continuously according to the actual need. Obviously, the application of C/S architecture is disadvantageous in updating electronic flow in good time. And the application of B/S architecture depends on the connection very excessively. Once losing the connection the whole process would stop. This does not agree with the request of the actuality.Not only the technique of smart client can realize the off-line operation and can make use of the native resources, but also deployment and update are very simple. Smart client avoid many bugs and can be said to be the best way to develop the system of OA.On the foundation of smart client, this paper studied its technical characteristics, data type, the network connection, the method of occasionally connected, safety exaltation, intelligent deployment and update. These several aspects are advantages of smart client. Then this paper designed the architecture of OA system under the mode of occasionally connected, and resolved a few key problems. Those are how to judge the network state which is on-line or off-line, how to save the data of procedure in the cathe to assure that the program can run normally under the condition of off-line, when the client connected the server from the state of off-line, how to return data to the server to realize data of client and server are synchronous.In a word, the OA system of the publication field of science and technology book would make the work more efficiency under the mode of occasionally connected. The successful usage of this system would bring certain reference value for the update of the office automation system and information management system.
