Software Metrics Applied Research, In The Implementation Of The Cmm

With rapid development of computer industry, the complexity of software project management increases, and becomes one of the most important factors for survival and development of the software companies, so more and more software companies begin to pay great attention to the improvement of software process. In recent years, the research institute, mainly SEI/CMU, has developed a series of software process improvement model/standard, in which CMM has been the standard of software process improvement, representing the most advanced theory. Many software companies in China have been adopting CMM to improve software process. Emphasizing on metric, CMM adopts metric data to accelerate the process improvement, but CMM does not define how to implement the metric, so many companies are in the phase of exploration. And metric sometimes impedes software process improvement instead of promote it. Combining with the frame of CMM software process improvement, this article raises a practicable process model for software metric, then apply this model to a large-scaled domestic software company in the project process control and software process improvement of software companies.Software metric cannot fully play its part. Targeted at this common status quo, this article did deep investigation and research, finding three reasons for this status quo: 1) the process is not clear enough; 2) responsibility is not clarified; 3) lack of operable tools/forms. Aiming at those reasons, combining with the most popular software process improvement model CMM, a practicable model for software metrics is put forward. This model describes the whole process of software metrics from data collection, data verification, data filtration, making process improvement plan based on analysis result. "Data verification" and "data filtration" are defined as separate activities, nailing down the importance of the two activities.
