Nowadays, a small-batch, more adjustable and flexible mode of production with less or no storage is becoming more and more needful in manufacturing industry. MES (Manufacturing Execution System) was proposed in such a background. MES is an idea, as well as a kind of technology and software for management. It can help enterprises response more fast to the market and produce more seasonable products, so as to improve their market share and competitive capability.MES is a kind of software system that running on the level of production project, which between the level of enterprise project (ERP, Enterprise Resource Project) and production control(Automatization System). The main purpose of MES is production management, including production schedule and its optimization, materiel tracing, quality control, criterion of products, document management, equipment monitoring and energy sources supply. This paper introduces the main idea and realizing principle of MES firstly. Then basing on the OPT technology, it analyses how to optimize the flow of production in an enterprise. Considering the production management in tobacco industry and General Group, the General Group Manufacturing Execution System(GGMES) was designed and realized. The GGMES takes the 3-tier J2EE architecture for its platform of development and deployment. The usage of workflow technique makes the adjustment of business more flexible. Such a system has the properties of re-usage of resource, extendability and safety. The subsystems of production scheduling, producing quality control and analysis, PlantMetrics, process monitoring and equipment management are stressed. The key developing techniques are also discussed. Now the GGMES has been operating stably in the General Group and acquired good effect.
