With the emergence and rapid development of GPRS (General Packet Radio of Service), more and more applications of wireless mobile data communication are widely used. GPRS is high-speed and permanent online, as well as its expense can be counted with the flux data, so GPRS communication mode has high capability and low price in the field of intelligent instrument's long-distance communication.This article analyses the composition and the logical structure of GPRS communication system in which the signal flow and the process in connecting network are introduced in detail. Then a GPRS modem which chose SIM100E module as core component is designed for intelligent instrument's long-distance communication. On the foundation of this GPRS modem designing, a remote communication interface based on GPRS is designed. At the same time, an application for computer is written by using Delphi as programming language. At last, the interface was applied to electric ARMS (Automatic Meter Reading System) for verify it's performance, and the result showed it is stable and reliable. Compared with the other communication modes of intelligent instrument, GPRS communication mode used in the interface has short connected time, high real-time performance and low engineering expense, thus it is more suitable for some atrocious environments of mountainous and swamp area.
