Vehicle monitoring system is a new field that comes into being, as soon as electronic communication technology, computer network technology and database technology are applied in traffic control. It comprises control center, communication sever, wireless communication network and vehicle terminal, and makes real time monitoring the remote vehicle possible. So the vehicle monitoring system plays a more and more important role in the intelligent traffic field.Aiming at the current popular problems in the concrete industry, such as stealing oil, uploading the concrete privately, fatigue driving, speeding, and driving out of the working area when the diver of concrete mixer truck is on the way to the construction site, this paper proposes a vehicle remote monitoring system based on client/server (C/S) model:the front-end vehicle terminal and the back-end remote monitoring system. This paper focuses on design and development of the back-end remote monitoring system.The main contents of the paper are discussed in detail as follows:Firstly, this paper analyses the research status of the remote vehicle monitoring system both domestically and overseas, and introduces the background and significance of the research on this subject.Secondly, the paper discusses the key technology of vehicle remote monitoring system, such as GPS, GPRS, Socket and GIS.Thirdly, according to the practical problems in the concrete industry, this paper proposes a remote monitoring system based on GPS and GPRS. The system includes the communication server developed based on the select socket model, the monitoring center developed based on the GIS re-development component MapX, and the remote upgrade center developed based on socket. In order to help the communication server communicates with the vehicle terminal, the monitoring center and the remote upgrade center conveniently, we define the communication protocol between the communication server and the vehicle terminal, the monitoring center and the remote upgrade center. The vehicle terminal uploads the GPS location and running state information that packed by the communication protocol to the communication server through GPRS network, and the communication server transmits it to the monitoring center. The controller could get the current position and running state of the concrete mixer trucks through the remote monitoring center. What’s more, the system could upgrade the vehicle terminals from the upgrade center. Compared with the traditional local method, the remote upgrade method has an advantage of timeliness and economy.Finally, we test the overall operation of the vehicle remote monitoring system, and the result shows that the functions of the system are so stable and reliable that the system is competent the task of monitoring the remote concrete mixer trucks.This research develops and implements a remote monitoring system of concrete mixer trucks, which has been put into practical application at present. The successful application of this system is convenient for the operation and management of concrete mixer trucks, and improves the operational benefit of the vehicle. It has remarkable social and economic benefit.
