In this thesis, research on a W-band hybrid integrated VCO is presented, and the first domestic design for a W-band microstrip integrated Gunn VCO is proposed. The simulation, assembling and testing of the VCO are also given.Millimeter-wave oscillators are hearts of millimeter-wave systems, and key components of millimeter-wave systems for radars, communications, electronic-wars and so on. Today, millimeter-wave systems are expected to be more and more compact and light, so reduction of both dimensions and weight of the circuits is needed. What's more, excellent performance is also expected, including high output power levels, broad tuning bands, low noise figure and proper structures for easily assembling. Because of the current technology in China, planar hybrid integrated VCOs are good for design. At the beginning, the developments of W-band planar hybrid integrated millimeter-wave VCOs are reviewed, and a Gunn diode is selected as the active device due to the current technology of semiconductor in China.Abiding by the principle for negative resistance oscillator, the Gunn diode is modeled, and microstrips are chosen as transmitting lines. Parallel resonating analysis for the VCO is presented to make sure the VCO will oscillate at the stipulated frequency. A varactor is used to tune the frequency of the VCO, and optimization is processed to get broad tuning band. The microstrip-waveguide transition, the circuit for DC bias, and the DC-blocked capacitor in the VCO are analyzed, and the analysis is generally useful for design of millimeter-wave planar circuit. As mentioned above, the simulation and optimization is processed, and the VCO is fabricated and tested. With the analysis on the results, suggestions for further research are given.
