An auto leveling instrument system based on CMOS image sensors is described in this thesis. The MCU and its outside circuits handle the image signals obtained by CMOS image sensors, to locate the positions of the bubbles in the plate level. In addition, the MCU judges whether the plate level has been a horizontal place according to these data, and then control the stepping motor to make the instrument level. Topics on the system distinguishing precision and the adjustable precision are also discussed in this thesis, as well as the method to improve the precision. The experiment results show that this auto leveling system can achieve the goal of auto leveling fairly well. What is more, such system greatly simplify the leveling steps in geometric instrument, making it more convenient in measurement. The hardware and software components are introduced at length. In this thesis hardware components consist of the image sensors, the MCU and its outside circuits, and the motor driving. Software components primarily include the image Collection of CMOS image sensors, image signal processing, data transmission simulation of the 1IC bus in the MCU's I/O ports, and the embedded codes of motor driving. The possible improvements of the current system are provided in the end.
