Infrared video target detection and tracking system(IVTDS) is an important field of digital image processing, it is widely used in military and civil affairs. Digital image processing requires the large storage and high speed technology. It could not get better result if only use field programmable gate array (FPGA) or digital signal processing chip (DSP). Nowadays, it is common practice to use FPGA+DSP scheme for real-time infrared image processing. The progress of VHDL language and its architecture are introduced in this paper. And also discussed the problems on how to use VHDL language to describe the hardware system. Based on the hardware architecture of IVTDS, are discussed in detail the component units of the system which are image data acquisition unit, data pre-processing unit and logical control etc. The design of the FPGA function and its implementation are carried on VHDL language and TOP-DOWN method.
