Design and research of video image acquisition and processing system based on the FPGA is introduced in the thesis. The image processing techniques and the programmable logic device design technology, which is widely used in the current digital signal processing, is combined in this design. The shortcomings that depends on the computer is overcome, and the status that collateral execution is hard to complete for the DSP chips and the hardware framework can not be modificated with change of system requirements is avoided. At the same time, the limited speed of the design space and the lack of flexibility can be enhanced.The whole system is organized and controlled by the FPGA of Altera Cyclone II Pro-family; the system performs real-time video capture, storage and pre-processing. The system consists of SAA7111 initialization module, image collection control module, SRAM control module. The initialization of video processing chip, control of acquisition process and storage of image data are mainly achieved in image acquisition part. At the end of this article, the familiar image preprocess algorithms are introduced, including filters and edge detection of the image. In the process of histogram equalization, the fast parallel histogram statistical scheme is adopted, and efficiency of the system is improved; In the process of Median filter, the modified median filtering and pipeline architecture is used to improve the module the processing speed.The full design is synthesized and simulated on Quartus II of Altera Corp. The simulation indicate that the design of image processing algorithm based of FPGA can not only achieve a processed result and get a high frequency, but also it can give a better performance of speed than using software and suit for real-time image processing. The realization of image acquisition and processing on FPGA is an effective, convenient and economic method. Consequently this subject has a wide prospect of application and market value.
