Video image processing systems are widely applied in military and commercial fields. In the military field, due to its noncontact, interference immunity and concealment, object detection and tracking based on video image processing technology became an important application and study field. In the commercial field, it is widely used in machine vision and industrial detection systems.This paper first studies the effect on the performance of real time of the image processing system coming from the image processing algorithms, then it points out that parallel processing is a effective method to resolve the real time problem of the system. It is hot to using parallel processing devices to process images. This paper also studies the structure and working mode of the FPGAs, then lists the advantages of the FPGAs used to process images to resolve the problem of real time. It studies the design flexibility, increasing or reducing functions, programmability of software and hardware, integration of the SOPC based on the FPGA and analyses the design way of thinking and flow of the image processing system on a programmable chip.According to the functions of the real time image processing system, this paper partitions software and hardware functions, then constructs the global structure of the real time image processing system based on SOPC technology. It also designs structures of image acquisition and storage, processing and displaying function modules. Considering that the time of image preprocessing is the key fact affecting the performance of real time, it designs hardware circuits for median filtering and edge detection. The pipelined and parallel processing methods are used in circuit design to raise processing speed and save hardware resource. Experiments are made to verify the preprocessing circuits. Results of the experiments indicate that the hardware circuit meets the requirement of the system and has some practical reference value.
