Channel coding and decoding module is an important part of the mobile communication system. In this thesis, the author mainly describes the design and implementation of the viterbi decoder which is one part of the WCDMA channel coding and decoding system.The physical layer protocol of the WCDMA system, especially the channel coding and decoding process is discussed for the first point. At the same time, the thesis research the convolution coding and decoding theory in detail, as well as present the process of research on theory and simulation of this viterbi decoder. Soon the author describes a little relative conception of the IPCore. On this base, the design and implementation of the viterbi decoder IPCore in WCDMA system is discussed in detail.The IPCore was designed by the Verilog HDL(Hardware Describe Language), combined with the simulation software MODELSIM and synthesis software SYNPLIFY. After the functional simulation and timing simulation, the IPCore was implemented in the ALTERA APEX series FPGA to be tested and the result is totally up to the mustard of the channel decoder of the WCDMA HER 10'3 transmit service.
