The development of a novel sensor system based on surface plasmon resonance for bio-chemical applications is presented in this thesis in detail. The system is designed with the concept of Virtual Instrument, consisting of a SPR sensor, a DAQ system and a flow control system. An embedded controller coordinates these three parts and communicates with PC, which realizes the control panel. The SPR sensor can be configured to detect the resonant momentum or the intensity of optical wave near the resonance. The DAQ system functions as measuring the reflectivity of SPR sensor, exciting auxiliary sensors and acquiring their outputs. The flow control system decides the contents and flowing speed of reagents or samples. A formula for evaluating the sensitivity and accuracy of our sensor system is also introduced in this paper. Preliminary performance data indicate the system's powerful ability on directly monitoring interactions between biomolecules.
